Cleanaway Bridgewater

Project Overview

Falcon Building Group partnered with Cleanaway Waste Management to deliver Tasmania’s first state of the art clinical waste facility. Located at Cleanaway’s existing industrial waste control centre in Bridgewater, the project provides a critical service for the state’s health sector by ensuring the safe treatment and disposal of clinical and hazardous waste.

This milestone facility strengthens Tasmania’s capacity to manage medical, pharmaceutical and healthcare waste in a safe, efficient and environmentally safe way. Officially opened on July 22, 2025, it represents a significant step forward in public health and environmental protection.

Timelines & Expectations

The project was completed to align with Cleanaway’s operational deadlines and regulatory approvals. Delivering such a specialized facility required close coordination between Falcon Building Group, Cleanaway, regulatory authorities and specialist equipment suppliers. Through detailed planning and consistent site supervision, the project was handed over on time, ready for commissioning and operational use.

Scope Of Work

The scope included the construction of a purpose built facility within the existing waste control centre, designed to house:

  • A custom-designed autoclave to sterilise clinical waste at high temperatures and pressure.
  • A new precast concrete trade wastewater tank, construction from precast surrounds and a reinforced precast lid, installed 3.0m below finished floor level.
  • Application of a specialized epoxy coating capable of withstanding up to 85 degrees celsius to protect internal tank surfaces and prevent leakages.

At full capacity, the facility can process up to 2,600 tonnes of clinical waste per year, supporting hospitals, pharmacies, aged-care facilities, pathology labs, dentists, veterinary practices, universities, childcare centers and other industries across Tasmania.

Challenges & Key Outcomes

Delivering Tasmania’s first clinical waste autoclave facility required:

  • Specialist coordination of engineering services and suppliers for the autoclave installation.
  • Strict compliance with health, safety and environmental standards.
  • Underground works to install the wastewater tank below the existing waste control centre floor.
  • Quality assurance in applying the high temperature epoxy coating to guarantee containment.

Despite these complexities, the project was completed successfully, meeting Cleanaway’s requirements for safety, sustainability and operational excellence.

This project was delivered by one of Falcon Building Groups project delivery team with a team of skilled trades and subcontractors, who each played a vital role in ensuring the facility met the high standards required for this type of specialized build.

“This project was a real team effort. Coordinating specialist trades and suppliers to bring Cleanaway’s first clinical waste facility to life was both challenging and rewarding. The level of precision required, from the installation of the autoclave to the underground wastewater tank, meant attention to detail was critical. Thanks to the commitment of our skilled trades and strong collaboration with Cleanaway, we were able to deliver a facility that will have a lasting impact on Tasmania’s healthcare sector”

Project Impact

This project delivers long term value to Tasmania by providing the state’s first purpose built clinical waste treatment facility. Beyond the construction itself, the facility ensures:

  • A safer process for handling and treatment of hazardous medical waste.
  • A sustainable alternative to incineration, reducing harmful emissions.
  • Capability to support 2,600 tonnes of waste per year, safeguarding health services, businesses and the wider community.

The outcome is not just a new facility, but a critical piece of infrastructure that underpins public health and environmental protection for Tasmania.
