Cradle Mountain Bus Shelter
Project Overview
Falcon Building Group partnered with Bison Constructions to deliver a new 500m2 bus depot at Cradle Mountain, a purpose built facility designed to support year round vehicle servicing in one of Tasmania’s most challenging alpine environments.
The new depot enhances the reliability, safety and efficiency of Cradle Mountain’s transport network, ensuring both tourism operators and local services can continue to operate smoothly, even in extreme conditions.
Timelines & Expectations
The project required a coordinated delivery approach, careful sequencing of works to accommodate alpine weather conditions, site access limitations and the operational requirements of transport services in the area. The expectation was to deliver a durable, practical and long lasting facility capable of handling high vehicle use and harsh environmental exposure.
Scope of Work
The new depot combines enclosed workshop areas with open service bays to accommodate a wide variety of buses, from large coaches to smaller transport vehicles.
Key scope items included:
· Structural steel clear span construction
· Wide roller door access for efficient vehicle movement
· Open and enclosed service bays
· Durable concrete flooring throughout
· Storage, mechanical and maintenance ready work zones
· Weather resilient roof pitch designed to manage alpine snow loads
· Flexible layout to support day to day transport servicing activities
Challenges & Key Outcomes
Delivering a facility in an alpine environment brought unique challenges, including unpredictable weather and the need for durable, low maintenance finishes. Through close coordination with Bison Constructions, efficient sequencing and fit for purpose material selections, the team delivered a robust depot that improves workflow, withstands local conditions and supports ongoing transport operations throughout the year.
Project Impact
The completed Cradle Mountain Bus Shelter significantly improves maintenance efficiency and operational reliability for the region’s transport fleet. With better protection from harsh conditions, increased maneuvering space and practical service bays, the facility helps keeps buses moving, supporting tourism, local business and community access year round.
